Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is a condition characterized by recurring intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals performed to relieve anxiety. These thoughts are typically unwanted and distressing, and the behaviors are often carried out in an attempt to reduce fear or prevent something bad from happening.
OCD is not simply about being neat or detail-oriented. It involves a cycle of anxiety and compulsive actions that can consume significant time and interfere with daily functioning, work, and relationships.
Signs & Symptoms:
- Intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions)
- Repetitive behaviors or rituals (compulsions)
- Feeling compelled to “check” or “redo” tasks
- Time-consuming rituals that interfere with daily life
- Anxiety that worsens if rituals are resisted

Therapy
CBT with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), ACT

Medications
SSRIs (fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, sertraline), sometimes antipsychotics for resistant cases
Importance:
Untreated OCD can significantly disrupt daily functioning and quality of life.
